Community Outreach
India has introduced numerous welfare schemes aimed at providing social security and economic support to tribal communities, addressing areas such as healthcare, education, livelihood, land rights, and cultural preservation.
Though things have improved, sadly, the average tribal continues to live in poverty and ignorance, the victim of superstitious beliefs and unhealthy health practices.
Through education at a more formal level, and dedicated grassroots efforts in rural communities, the Jesuits have been striving to help the indigenous tribal groups find meaning and hope in their lives.
Background
The Kohima Jesuits have been working to improve the living standards of the tribal communities in India.
Among their most notable efforts are initiatives in the non-traditional sector, which include:
Initiatives & Engagements
Self Help Groups: Empowering the local communities, particularly women, to address the challenges they face.
Income-Generating Training: Programs such as mushroom cultivation, fishery, pig breeding, traditional weaving, beekeeping, and other cottage industries help boost livelihoods.
Rear a Pig and Educate a Child: This highly successful initiative has enabled many students from economically disadvantaged families to receive a quality education.
The Women's Weaving Cooperative has been another successful initiative in helping families raise funds to meet their ordinary expenses.
